Network embedding is dimension reduction for networks in which one usually embeds nodes of the network into a low-dimensional latent space (most commonly an Euclidean space). Network embedding has seen a lot of success, including modern machine learning algorithms. In fact, we have an increasing amount and variety of temporal (i.e., time-varying) network data. In this talk, I present a network embedding method for temporal network data. Our method is not only a new algorithm but is conceptually new in that, we regard that, the entire network, not the individual nodes, constitutes a single point in a low-dimensional space, and the single point, which represents the abstracted state of the network, moves over time as the network varies over time. We demonstrate the method with social contact network data and find nontrivial daily periodic patterns among other things. We also develop a related method to identify recurrence of temporal networks (i.e., at time t_2, the temporal network comes back to one similar to a past network (at time t_1 (< t_2)) by extending the same method developed for general time series data in 1980s to the case of temporal networks. We demonstrate our recurrence plot and quantification analysis method on airport networks, finding sudden transitions and periodic, seasonal patterns of network changes whose details depend on the airline.
报告人简介
Naoki Masuda (Nationality: Japanese) has been full Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, State University of New York at Buffalo, since 2021. His research interests include network science and mathematical biology. He particularly focuses on temporal networks, analysis of biological and medical network data, models of contagion processes, and random walks on networks. He received a PhD in Mathematical Engineering in 2002 from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He worked as Lecturer and then Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo between 2006 and 2014. He worked as Senior Lecturer and then Associate Professor at the University of Bristol, UK, between 2014 and 2019. He moved to State University of New York at Buffalo in 2019 as Associate Professor in 2019 and became full Professor in 2021.
His current h-index is 55 and his work has received over 10,000 citations (updated from Google Scholar statistics on September 2, 2024).
